On Saturday, April 20, some Alabama GOG members and friends will be gathering at Cheaha State Park for a weekend of riding, feeding, visiting, and camping. COGers, friends and interested riders are cordially invited to join us. Some of the best back roads in Alabama twist and turn their way up and down the hills through the Talladega Mountains, at foot of the Appalachian Mountains, and along the Coosa River Valley. The park is located approximatly 15 miles south of Anniston, on State Highway 281. There are several large arteries which converge at Anniston (I 20, US 431, US 78), but I prefer the smaller roads such as State 9 north/south.

Mt. Cheaha is the highest point in Alabama (3400 ft approx- what do you expect? Everest ?) and the weather in February can be unpredictable, so prepare accordingly. When it good, it's great! When it's rainy and cold, it's great! The park has a full range of accommodations, from a hotel on the bluff overlooking the Coosa Valley with a hand constructed stone restaurant with crackling fire and panoramic views hanging off the side, to small stone cottages, modern chalets, full hookup camping, and primitive camping. We plan to meet in the full service camp ground since it is on the top of the mountain rather than down below at Lake Chinabee, where the secluded primitive sites are located.

This is basically an opportunity to get together, and start off the new riding season with a bang! Area maps will be available with special routes marked, including a day trip for visiting the Little River Canyon. Great roads with little traffic !

If you want to reserve a room, cabin, or chalet (or check the weather before you leave - we'll be there regardless ) call 1-800-ALA-PARK or 1-205-488-51115. Hope to see you there!
