License plate bracket mounted helmet lock and super bright LED holder
Scan of 1/2 bracket w/0.5" end holes (needs to be 9/16 if not using project box enclosures)
The 9/16" holes on either end hold the Jumbo Super Bright LED's in their holders. The 13/64" and 15/32" holes hold the helmet locks mounting bolts and guide holes respectively. The 15/64" holes mount the bracket to the license plate mount holes. The bracket assembly is 12" wide by 1 1/2" tall, 1/8" thick aluminum. I found a 6' flat bar at Eagle Hardware ($9.15) I replaced the helmet lock bolts with stainless steel M5x16mm bolts, flat washers and lock nuts ($2.10) Left & Right helmet locks are exactly the same so do not mirror those holes (I'd flip one upside down if I wanted to lock up 2 helmets) I run a cable from one lock through my riding suit arms and helmet D ring then back to the other lock. R-Shack "Orange Jumbo High Brightness" LED (Cat# 276-206 $3.99ea). 10mm round and puts out 12000 mcd. View angle sucks, I've made efforts to angle the entire bracket up as well as the project box enclosures (see below) I've use because the natural angle of this mount does not work well with the narrow view angles of these LED's. Use a 470 ohm resistor half watt (RS Cat 271-1115 $0.49 5ea). Snap in panel mount LED holder (3 per package) Cat# 276-092 $0.99. Wire from the positive running light lead from the bike to the resistor and then to the longer lead of the LED. Go from the shorter lead to negative. Wire tap splices 4 ea ($0.89) The entire assembly mounts onto the license plate bracket with stainless bolts, flat washers, and lock washers ($2.86) PROJECT TOTAL $20.47 with enough flat bar to do 5 more brackets. Mini project enclosures can also be added to the ends of the bracket enclosing the LED, holder, and resistor. This gives the project a different and cleaner from the rear look. The boxes are 2.125 x 1.375 x 0.58" and made of black ABS plastic matching the saddle bags (RS Cat# 270-288 $1.99 ea)
