Lakes Parks Tour
Tour of three NY State Parks with beautiful gorges that were created
during the last ice age 10,000 - 12,000 years ago. Visit one or all
three of these parks.
Robert Treman State Park - Upper Park. Walk into the Gorge (~1/4
mile) and down the upper gorge trail to Lucifer Falls. This trail provides
fantastic views of water falls and sheer cliff walls of a 12,000 years
young ice age gorge. Be sure to walk as far as Lucifer Falls (~ 75 foot
fall). It is truly one of the most beautiful and serene places on earth.
The upper park gorge is a must see! Allow ~1 hr to hike the gorge.
Taughannock Falls State Park.
Taughannock Falls Overlook provides an excellent view of a 215 foot
water fall on Taughannock Creek. You will want to visit the Falls Overlook
before exploring the remainder of the Park on Cayuga Lake. The overlook
is on Falls Road, ~1/2 mile west of route 89. Pass the entrance to Taughannock
Falls State Park and turn left on Falls Rd. Ride to the top of the hill
0.5 mi to a large parking lot on the left. The 215 foot waterfall on
Taughannock creek can be viewed from the edge of the parking lot. A
gorge trail follows the creek from the bowl at the bottom of the falls
to Cayuga Lake.
Watkins Glen State Park.
This park's gorge ends in the village of Watkins Glen which is famous
for both the State Park and the Watkins Glen Race Track on the hill
above the Park. This is also a spectacular gorge with a gentle hiking
trail. It is well worth the time to take the gentle hike through the
Watkins Glen Gorge Trail.
Estimated mileage
181 miles. !
