New for 2006
PA
Elk Herd Loop
(provided by Jason Kaplitz)
There
is only one place in the Eastern United States that you can see Elk,
wild in nature. Pennsylvania! Yes, Pennsylvania. This route will take
you to Benezette, Pa. home of the Pennsylvania Elk Head. Honestly, your
chance of seeing an Elk in broad day light is slim, or maybe next to
none but this is
still a great route! Along with Benezette, you'll visit Austin, Pa.
where you can see the ruins of the Austin
Dam, which broke in 1911and you'll pass through St.Marys Pa.(good
lunch stop) and enjoy parts of Routes 6, 120 & 144, all some of
the nicest roads in norht central Pa.!
Williamsport
Loop (provided
by Jason Kaplitz)
This route will be a fun day! You'll spend some time
on Rt. 144 & 44 which are some of the best in the State! You'll
skirt Williamsport Pa., home of the little league hall of fame. (Rt.
15 south if you must) You'll pass through Worlds End S.P. and can stop
for a great lunch in Forksville at the General Store. We even routed
you past a neat little winery at Oregon Hill! This route really does
expose you to some of the best riding in north central Pa. Enjoy!
Sunset
Hill Shooting Range
(provided by Micheal Flynn)
Are you feeling lucky?
Well, are ya? If so, take this full day ride to a unique shooting range
and fire some of Hollywood's famous weapons. They have the Dirty Harry
.44 Magnum, Glock 9mm, AK47, M1 Garand, AR15, Desert Eagle .50 cal handgun,
just to name a few. Sunset
Hill is Pensyvania's premier shooting range. This
is a full day's ride (approx. 4 hours each way), so get an early start.
If you decide to do the highway route, it's about 3 hours each way.
The
Sunset Hill Shooting Rage web site has all the info you need, including
rental charges. They are open 10a-5pm Thursday-Sunday. Phone number
is 570-629-3981. Hearing protection is required for ALL people going
onto the range whether they shoot or not. If you don't have your own,
you must rent a set for $1. My molded earplugs were fine for hearing
protection there. There are a variety of guns to choose from when you
rent at the range. You will need to bring a driver's license along with
your group. They hang onto the license while you're out shooting. An
instructor is with you at all times while you are shooting. The instructor
will mark down on a card you will receive everything that you shoot.
When you're all done, you pay inside and get your license back. You
don't have to choose what you want to shoot before you go on the range,
you can make your decision as you go.
Wellsboro Area
Rides from the Past
Run
For Buns Lunch Ride
The ride
will take you on the east side of RT 15, where you will ride along the
mountain ridges on Route 6. Heading south at Troy you will probably
see spring planting of the farmer's crops. In this area Martha and I
saw foxes running around and some young turkeys. While on Route 87SW
you will be riding along Loyalsock Creek, which is in the valleys of
Pennsylvania, and one of the tributaries that feeds the Susquehanna
River. Eventually getting to Route 44, then heading North to Route 414
to Slate Run, running along Pine Creek where I was lucky enough to see
a bald eagle swoop down and grab a fish out of the river. Wolfe's
General Store & Slate Run Tackle Shop is where you will get
you (pre-ordered) lunch or dinner sandwich. These are the best sandwiches
in town. They come on a 6x6 fresh made bun. "Don't squeeze the
buns too hard or else your lunch meat and condiments will ooze out."
If you are into fishing, check out the different flies downstairs. After
getting your bellies filled with sandwiches, we head back to Wellsboro
where we can go to the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania or other sites nearby.
Curtis
Museum-Bully Hill-Watkins Glenn-Ginny Lee Cafe
This is the "big route" of the weekend. If you've never been
to this area this is the ride you'll want to do!
We'll leave Wellsboro and travel north through some wonderful country
eventually ending up in Hammondsport NY, home of the Curtis
Museum and Bully Hill Winery.
The Curtis Museum will tell the story of Glenn H. Curtis, a famous inventor
that was instrumental in early aviation development and a whole list
of other revolutionary inventions! We've arranged discounted admission;
you'll need about 1.5 hours to visit. After the museum we'll travel
just a few short miles to the Bully
Hill Winery that is perched high above Keuka Lake. Bully Hill is
fun place to visit with a high energy tasting experience and a neat
museum if you like. You can lunch here or continue on to our planned
lunch stop near Watkins Glen.
We'll leave Bully Hill and travel to Watkins Glen, NY, the heart of
the Finger Lakes region and
home to Watkins Glen International Speedway, We have a great lunch stop
planned on the east side of Seneca Lake at the Wagner
Winery and their Ginny Lee Cafe'. You'll love the view of the lake
and the winery and micro brew are first class! After lunch you'll have
time to visit other wineries on your return trip to Wellsboro.
The
Best Loop in the State
Our route will take us west to Galeton, PA. Home of the PA
Lumber Museum. We'll head south on Route 144 (I think it's the best
motorcycle road in the state) to Renovo, PA. Renovo is an old Railroad
town along the Susquehanna River, if you're looking for an early lunch
the Sportsman Inn just east of town should fill the bill! We'll continue
south to Phillipsburg, PA and through the Black Moshannon State Forest.
I promise you'll have a smile on your face all morning long. We have
a lunch stop picked out in Mill Hall, PA. We'll skirt past Lockhaven
home to the University of Lockhaven & Woolrich, PA, the home of
Woolrich Clothing and their great
outlet store! Ching, Ching!
Our run north back to Wellsboro will take us on Route 287 (maybe the
2nd best motorcycle road in the state) and will be a great finish to
a great day of riding!
Corning
Museum of Glass & Wings of Eagles National Warplane Museum
We'll travel north out of Wellsboro headed directly to the Corning
Museum of Glass. We've arranged for discounted admission to this
wonderful museum, and you won't want to miss it. It has recently undergone
a multi million-dollar renovation! You'll need 2 to 3 hours for this
visit. After your visit at the museum you can take the shuttle or walk
over the bridge to downtown Corning for lunch. This is a very vibrant
small town with many shops and restaurants, you won't be disappointed.
While in Corning, NY you might
also want to visit the Rockwell
Museum of Art, which is also in downtown. After your visit to Corning
it's just a short ride to the Wings
of Eagles Warplane Museum which is located at the Corning/Elmira
Airport. You'll need an hour or so to visit the museum. The sample route
takes you the most direct way to these destinations so you have time
to enjoy these terrific museums.
Dinosaur
Bar-B-Que
Here's
a route for those in search of some good BBQ. We have it on good authority
that the fare served in the Dinosaur
BBQ is good stuff. Enjoy the trip to either location and experience
some of NY's finest countryside. Feeling a bit hungry and adventurous?
Try the long route and overdose on BBQ. A stop for lunch and on to the
next for dinner. The all day trip has two possible endings. One hits
some slab (pun intended) on the way home, the other is all scenic. The
scenic route comes in at 395 miles (in the neighborhood of 10 hours).
The highway ending runs 413 miles but 9:15 hours.
