What a great ride! On Saturday April 22nd COG regulars Doug, Rick, Lance, and I were joined by COG newcomer Jim and almost-COGers Paul, Wade, and Belinda for the "Deckers Loop" event. We were on 6 Concours and one bright red Triumph Sprint, Lance's Concours replacement. Unlike last month's icy 18- degree conditions, we had a sunny, warm 70-degree day on hand. The ride started with the 130 curves of Deer and Turkey Creek Canyons on our way to Aspen Park. A few miles to the west we turned off US-285 at Pine Junction and headed south through the tight turns along the North Fork of the South Platte River through Pine and Buffalo Creek. Then it was a bunch of higher speed sweepers across the hills to Deckers. A quick stop for water, etc., then on through the forests to Woodland Park for a lunch stop. Plenty of motorcycling stories around the table, but sorry, no covered parking or bike-wash.
Heading west from Woodland Park we enjoyed the sight of a dark sky behind Pikes Peak with the snow-capped mountain still brightly lit by the sun. Those dark skies soon gave us about 15 minutes of light rain and even some snow/sleet. By the time we got to Lake George and turned north toward Tarryall we were back in warm sunshine. In spite of some potholes, the 40-some miles of highway 77 rated a 10. Lots of curves, little traffic, great mountain valley scenery, and too many log cabins and barns to count. At our stop in Jefferson we were all smiles and giving each other high fives. It really was a great bit of road.
After Jefferson we headed east to cross Kenosha Pass on our way back to the Denver area. Rick turned off early to take the Guanella Pass road to Georgetown and on to Lyons. Doug amused motorists with his on-Concours bouncing around in time to the tunes on his tape player. Another beautiful day in Colorado.
