Dual Sport Routes

Hundreds of miles of off-road adventures are available in a day ride from Frisco into the surrounding mountains. Included below are maps of suggested routes on county roads, jeep trails, forest roads and trails, routes varying from easy to moderately difficult. Depending on road conditions that may vary, all the routes should be negotiable on a KLR650 or other large dual sport bike.

Some guided tours will be available for sign-up most days. National Forest maps are available for purchase at the book stores in Frisco and Breckenridge and at the Ranger Station on CO-9 north of I-70 in Silverthorne. These are best for the routes that traverse the remote forest roads/trails with designated road numbers. Other resources will be listed on a link, below.

The "Be Prepared" Section

Many high country roads are opened by county or forest service snowplows by Memorial Day weekend. Local 4X4 clubs also clear out some key snow drifts on popular 4wd routes. But some roads above timber line (about 11,000 feet) may still be blocked by snowdrifts or avalanche debris, requiring a u-turn, giving yourself an opportunity to ride some other cool Rocky Mountain road.

Be aware that early June is the spring run-off time in the mountains from the winter snows, so there is more potential for water crossings and water running on the roads and trails than what would be found in July or August. Although much of the off-road surfaces in Colorado are rock, decomposed granite, gravel, and a little sand, in early June the melting snow will result in mud being found in plenty of places, possibly making knobbies necessary. (From our experience, Avon Gripsters work very well on pavement, rock, and dirt but are "slipsters" in mud. Tires are always a compromise.) Bottom line, road conditions may vary.

Also, the weather can change quickly at high altitudes and certainly can be much different than what is found down in Frisco. It is alway wise to carry the necessary gear to be ready for drops in temperature and for afternoon rain.
