Sand Hills Route to Hill City

Total Mileage: 532.6

Approximate Time: 8+ hours

The best part of the Sand Hills route is the 272-mile stretch from Grand Island to Alliance on Highway 2.  This Scenic Byway has been named one of the 10 most scenic routes in the nation. The dramatic Sand Hills, remote countryside, marshes and wetlands, winding rivers and hand planted forests will make this an enjoyable ride to Hill City.  Major attractions found along the Sand Hills route include the following:

Halsey National Forest (a man-made forest with an observation tower over the forest and sand hills), the town of Hyannis, and Carhenge near Alliance.  This trip to Hill City can be made in one day from Lincoln, but Broken Bow, Alliance, and Chadron all have good choices of motels and camping areas for overnight stays.  Other camping areas include Halsey National Forest and Chadron State Park.
